Collections on Microfilm
Many repositories microfilm their primary sources for preservation reasons or to provide wider access to their collections. Each of the Five College archives and special collections has some materials on microfilm, including scrapbooks, student newspapers, and other college publications. Some material may only be available on microfilm, or the originals may be so fragile that researchers are only allowed to view a collection on microfilm.
Microfilmed collections (or portions of collections) are often published, reproduced and purchased by other libraries or archives. These can usually be borrowed via interlibrary loan. Often a guide or index to the microfilm is also available. Researchers can make interlibrary loan requests through their own libraries.
Most Five College microfilmed materials are cataloged in the Five College Online Catalog. Microfilm copies of archival materials may be available in the main library, which means you are not limited to the hours that the special collections department is open. Microfilm Reader/Printers are available in all of the Five College libraries and in some of the archives.
