Scope and Contents of the Collection

The records of the Loom Fixers Association include executive committee minutes for the years 1900-1901 and 1911-1917, a treasurer's book (1901-1905), and six dues books, spanning the years 1895 to 1907.

The loom fixers were among the most skilled workers in the New England textile industry. Labor organization in the industry, however, was sporadic and often localized. The records of the Fall River Loom Fixers Association do not indicate a date of origin but show an affiliation with the United Textile Workers of America, at least during the 1910s.

The minutes of the Loom Fixers indicate a lively union culture. The union had its own meeting hall, and it organized parades, socials, and excursions. Moreover, the Union executive committee considered all grievances; thus the minutes demonstrate clearly how the union operated on the shop floor in terms of checking pay rates, intervening against offensive foremen, handling layoffs or reductions, and protesting poor working conditions.
