Abstract:
Hazel Vernon joined the staff of the YWCA in 1917. From 1919-1920, she worked for YWCA Turkey/Near East, after which she went on to help establish the YWCA in Czechoslovakia (1920-1922). The Hazel Vernon Miller papers consist of biographical materials, as well as items from her work with YWCA abroad.

Biographical Note

Hazel Maude Vernon Miller was born January 29, 1894 in Augusta, Illinois, to Frank J. and Louisa M. Vernon. She joined staff of the YWCA in 1917 and worked at the YWCA Hostess House at Camp Lee, Illinois from 1917-1919. From 1919-1920, Miller worked for the YWCA in Turkey/Near East, where she taught English and domestic science to Russian refugees. She went on to help establish the YWCA in Czechoslovakia, 1920-22, eventually returning home to Illinois in February 1922.

Miller met her husband Jimmy Miller at a YMCA dance in Turkey on September 6, 1919. They were married in Lubbock, Texas on January 23, 1923 and lived in Brownfield, Texas. Hazel taught high school mathematics for 35 years and served as President of the American Legion Auxiliary in Brownfield for several terms. She died in of heart failure on 3 July 1958.

History of the Collection

The Hazel Vernon Miller papers came to the Sophia Smith Collection with the Records of the YWCA of the U.S.A. in 2002. The YWCA received them from Miller's daughter, Eleanor Mayfarth, in 1994.
