Abstract:
Professor, Exercise and Sport Studies. Materials documenting Shelton's work as Smith College professor of Exercise and Sports Studies, as consultant for various girl's and women's sports organizations, and as a presenter at national and international conferences and workshops concerning advocacy for women's sports. Documentation of Shelton's work with the International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG), the International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women (IAPESGW), and the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta is also included.

According to the terms of the deed of gift, this collection is open without restrictions. However, during accessioning, the following boxes were found to contain student and personnel records, and must therefore be screened before researchers can access them: Acc.#08S-79, boxes 1-4, Acc#10S-72, boxes 1-2, and Acc.#12S-67, box 9; Acc.#16S-62--one folder with student grade rosters closed and moved to Misc. Collections--closed portions box in 62A.

Restrictions on use:

To the extent that she owns copyright, Christine Shelton has assigned the copyright in her works to Smith College; however, copyright in other items in this collection may be held by their respective creators. For reproductions of materials that are governed by fair use as defined under U. S. Copyright Law, no permission to cite or publish is required. For instances which may regard materials in the collection not created by Christine Shelton, researchers are responsible for determining who may hold materials' copyrights and obtaining approval from them. Researchers do not need anything further from Smith College Special Collections to move forward with their use.

Biographical / Historical

Christine M. Shelton earned her M.S. from James Madison University. She was professor of exercise and sport studies at Smith College, and taught primarily in the graduate program. At the graduate level she taught courses in philosophy and ethics, current issues, and sport pedagogy, and coordinates the coaching practicum. Within the minor, Shelton co-taught the undergraduate course on Sport and the American Dream, and was a performance instructor of tennis. She also served as the co-chair of the Project on Women and Social Change at Smith College. Beyond Smith College, Shelton is involved in national and international organizations that promote increased opportunities for girls and women in sports, including the International Working Group on Women and Sport and the International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women.

History of the Collection

Christine Shelton began donating her papers to the Sophia Smith Collection in 2008 (08S-79), and made additional donations in 2010 (10S-72), 2012 (12S-67), and 2016 (16S-62). Additionally, some papers belonging to Christine Shelton were sent to the SSC by Carole Oglesby in 2018 (2018-S-0007).

Provenance:

These papers were donated by Carole Oglesby along with her personal files and records. Due to their volume and relevance to Christine Shelton, they were deaccessioned from the Carole Oglesby papers and added to this collection.

Materials documenting Shelton's work as consultant for various girl's and women's sports organizations and as a presenter at national and international conferences and workshops concerning advocacy for women's sports.
