Abstract:

Papers include letters to family while working at Caney Creek Community Center, Pippa Passes, KY (1919); from Puerto Rico; and Hawaii (1940-42) with descriptions of the impact of the Pearl Harbor attack. Biographical Note

Ruth Tuthill Green (1895-1988) was raised in Moravia, New York. Attended Lasell Seminary, 1913. Graduated Smith College, 1918. Worked at Caney Creek Community Center, Kentucky. Teacher and Head of the English Department, U.S. Government School, Humacao High School, Puerto Rico, 1919-20. Studied at George Washington University, 1922-24. Married Thomas H. Green, 1921. Teacher, English, Penn Van New York Academy, 1920-21. Lived in Hawaii, 1940-42.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

Papers include letters of Ruth Tuthill Green to her parents and sister while working at Caney Creek Community Center, Pippa Passes, KY (1919); from Puerto Rico where she taught English and History at a U.S. government school (1919-20); and from Hawaii, (1940-42) with detailed accounts of the life of the wife of the military governor, Major Thomas H. Green (later Brigadier General). There are vivid descriptions of the impact of the Pearl Harbor attack, censored at first, then later retold under fewer censorship restrictions, and continued through the aftermath of the attack and the evacuation of dependents; and an extensive collection of newspaper clippings from Hawaii 1940-42. There are also travel diaries and memorabilia of Green's mother, Carrie Taylor Tuthill, Europe, 1892 and 1913, and circa 80 photos of Puerto Rico, 1919-20.
