Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Suffragist Oral History Project was undertaken by the Bancroft Library, University of California at Berkeley from 1959 to 1977. Its purpose was to record for posterity the life stories of women who experienced directly the struggle for women's rights and equality in the 20th century. The collection consists of transcripts of the following interviews:

Helen Valeska Bary: Labor Administration and Social Security, a Woman's Life

Sarah Bard Field: Poet and Suffragist

Burnita Shelton Matthews: Pathfinder in the Legal Aspects of Women

Conversations With Alice Paul

Jeanette Rankin: Activist for World Peace, Women's Rights and Democratic Government

Rebecca Hourwich Reyher: Search and Struggle for Equality and Independence

Mabel Vernon: Speaker for Suffrage and Petitioner for Peace
