Abstract:

The program offered high school girls, foreign nationals or U.S. citizens living abroad, an opportunity to spend one month at Smith pursuing their academic interests. Records contain primarily correspondence, evaluation forms, course descriptions, student work, photographs, and general information about the Institute.

Terms of Access and Use:

The majority of the records are open for research without restriction subject to the regulations of the College Archives. Budget materials are closed for 25 years from the date of creation and information about student participants and staff is closed for 75 years from the date of creation.

Historical Note

The Smith College International Summer Institute was proposed in 1996. The program offered high school girls, who were foreign nationals or U.S. citizens living abroad, an opportunity to spend one month at Smith pursuing their academic interests. The program was divided into two blocks of two weeks each in which the students would study computer science, English, psychology and economics while also working on individual research projects. The Institute operated successfully during the summer of 1997 with 13 students from 11 different countries. The program for the summer of 1998 was cancelled in late May.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The International Summer Institute files, which consist of 1.5 linear feet, contain primarily correspondence, publicity, photos and general information about the Institute. Of particular note are the evaluation forms regarding the quality of the program, course descriptions and examples of some of the research projects completed by participants in 1997.
