Correspondence, biographical material, speeches, photographs, etc., of Marine Leland, Professor of French at Smith College and was responsible for the forming and building of the French Canadian Collection in the William Allan Neilson Library at Smith College.

Biographical Note

Marine Leland was born on December 2, 1899 in the City of Quebec to American parents of English descent. She was educated in Montreal at the Sacred Heart Convent and in Germany, France, Spain, and the United States. After attending Latin School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she entered Radcliffe College where she received A.B. (1923), A.M. (1925), and PhD (1928). A member of the French Department at Smith College from 1924 until her retirement in June 1965, she pioneered a new course in French Canadian civilization and is responsible for the forming and building of the French Canadian Collection in the William Allan Neilson Library at Smith. Her contributions to a better understanding of the French Canadian culture has been widely recognized and honored. On May 13, 1983, she died at her home in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The papers comprise 6.7 linear feet (16 boxes) and are arranged by category: biographical, correspondence, professional life, miscellaneous and artifacts; chronologically within each folder. Her correspondents include colleagues in the United States, Canada, and Europe and organizations allied to her field.

Photographs can be found in the following folders: 1, 4-6, 8-14, 16, 18, 20-21, 41, 88, 121, 136, 177.

Oversize materials include: Diplomas of B.A. Radcliffe (1923), M.A. Radcliffe (1925), PhD. Radcliffe (1928), L.H.D. honorary Univ. of Laval (1952), and L.H.D. honorary Univ. of Montreal (1962).

History of the Collection

The materials in the Marine Leland papers, which form part of 42. Faculty Biographical files, came to the College Archives from Marine Leland during her lifetime. After her death the bulk of her papers were assembled by Margaret Storrs Grierson, Archivist Emerita of Smith College, and given to the College Archives in August 1983.
