Records include a history of the department, booklets, course and faculty information, diagrams, account books, notebooks and photographs of astronomical observations, information on observatory instruments, correspondence, and notes and photographs of astronomical societies. Student work is also included, as well as information on the Five College Program.

The Archives has no information on the status of literary rights in the collection and researchers are responsible for determining any question of copyright. Permission to cite the papers for publication of quotations beyond "fair use" must be obtained from the Smith College Archives.
