Biographical Note

Patricia Parks was born February 15, 1901. After graduating from Smith College with her B.A. in 1922, she married Roger C. Butterfield. Their daughter, Patricia Butterfield, later attended Smith College as a member of the Class of 1948. Upon her husband's death in 1949, Butterfield took a position as the Head of Stafford Hall at Mount Holyoke College. Three years later she returned to Smith College as the head of Jordan House. After retiring in 1966, Butterfield returned to Tennessee to care for her mother. She passed away in 1987 in Dickenson, Tennessee.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The collection contains several news releases from Butterfield's career at Smith College dating from 1952 to 1966 as well as letters from her retirement in Tennessee to Marilyn Thunfors Bremser, Class of 1955, and to the Pilcher family. Topics discussed include Butterfield's daily life, her interest in literature and politics, and her relationships with other Smith College alumnae.
