Abstract:
The Student Government Association listens to the student body, creates and maintains relations between the student body and the greater Smith community, and advocates for student needs. The Student Government Association records consist of files related to office matters, the Cabinet, Senate Finance Committee, minutes and correspondence, heads of organizations, House of Reps 1966 Vietnam Poll, Social Justice and Equity committee, social regulations, photographs, and a self-published cook-book. The records span the years 1966-2016.

Biographical / Historical

The Student Government Association listens to the student body, creates and maintains relations between the student body and the greater Smith community, and advocates for student needs.

The Association began as the Student Council in 1896 and retained that name until 1959. As of that year, it has held the current name.

Scope and Contents

The Student Government Association records consist of files related to office matters, the Cabinet, Senate Finance Committee, minutes and correspondence, heads of organizations, House of Reps 1966 Vietnam Poll, Social Justice and Equity committee, social regulations, photographs, and a self-published cook-book. The records span the years 1966-2016.

15 of the collection's 48 boxes are arranged in 25 accessions. 33 boxes have no accession number.

Scope and content:

Records of sale and budgeting, memoranda, hand-drawn fliers advertising the Koffee Klatsch and its events, photographs of volunteer staff and events, correspondence between Smith College and student leadership, table tents, invoices, 6 coffee mugs, and a self-published cook-book of favorite Koffee Klatsch member recipes.

Biographical note:

The Koffee Klatsch was a student volunteer-run coffee and pastry shop, located in Seelye Hall from the mid-1970s until the late 1980s. In conjunction with Smith College Student Government Association, the Koffee Klatsch sold food and coffee to raise funds for student activities and hosted or catered events, including mobile sales across campus, live music nights, and other activities.
