The Anthropology Department at Mount Holyoke College was established as a distinct department in 1929. In 1949, the department was disbanded and anthropology courses were taught through the Department of Economics and Sociology. Since 1971, anthropology has been taught through the Sociology and Anthropology Department.
The records of the Mount Holyoke College Anthropology Department consist of correspondence, reports, lecture series announcements, course outlines and syllabi, book lists, and photographs. The records briefly outline the history of the Anthropology Department at Mount Holyoke. They also describe both the subject of anthropology in general and the status of the Mount Holyoke Anthropology Department. A significant number of the departmental reports written before 1950 are by Harriet M. Allyn, a departmental chair.
