A Business Manager was appointed in 1958, and, at different times, the position was held by the Assistant Treasurer and Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds (1958-1967); the Assistant Treasurer (1971-1972); the Treasurer (1973-1981); and the Director of Physical Facilities (1982-1986). A separate Office of the Business Manager existed from 1986 to 1987, at which time the Office of the Dean of Administration and Business Manager was formed. This office directly oversees the department of Buildings and Grounds, College purchasing and the ownership, leases and rentals of College property. Although the financial services offices are no longer associated with it, the Office of the Dean of Administration and Business Manager indirectly oversees the administrative functions of most of the College's offices, including financial services.
The records of the Office of the Treasurer and Business Manager contain correspondence (1933-1975) between the Comptroller and the landscape architectural firm of Arthur Shurcliff; and student surveys dated 1972. They provide information about the history of the campus's physical face, and an overview of students' interests and on-campus social activities.
