The Conference Committee (sometimes known as the Committee on Conference), was established in 1925 in response to a proposal made by Mount Holyoke faculty members. The purpose of the Committee was to promote cooperation and communication among College trustees, the faculty as represented by members of the Faculty Conference Committee, and students as represented by members of the Student Conference Committee (also known as the Student Advisory Committee to the Trustees). Members of the committee are also involved in the selection of recipients of honorary degrees from the College.
Materials relating to the Conference Committee date from 1942-1955, 1967-1969, and 1985-1993 and include records of the Board of Trustees Conference Committee, the Faculty Conference Committee, the Joint Conference Committee (comprised of members of both the Trustee and Faculty Conference Committees) and the Student Conference Committee. Records include minutes or other summaries of meeting, correspondence, reports, questionnaires, student surveys, and lists. Topics discussed in these records include admissions standards, the responsibilities of academic department chairs, changes to the curriculum, the creation and maintenance of a diverse community within the College, lesbian, gay and bisexual concerns, faculty and staff benefits, and possible candidates for Mount Holyoke College honorary degrees.
