The Mount Holyoke College chapter of Second Amendment Sisters was founded by Christie Caywood, Class of 2003 in September of 2001. The group was the first college chapter of Second Amendment Sisters, Inc. an organization established in 1999 to educate people about self-defense and advocate for Second Amendment rights (the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms). At Mount Holyoke, the approximately fifty members of the group met to socialize and practiced target shooting. The group is listed as a student organization in Mount Holyoke College telephone directories through the 2004/2005 academic year.
Records of the Mount Holyoke College chapter of Second Amendment Sisters (SAS) contain articles, an interview, photographs, publications, clothing and objects dating from 1986-2002. Most of the material in the collection consists of articles, booklets, newsletters, books and pamphlets issued by the group's parent organization, Second Amendment Sisters, Inc. or the National Rifle Association of America (NRA). These publications discuss federal and state Constitutional provisions for the right to keep and bear arms, gun control legislation, self-defense, firearm safety, and issues such as children and guns and suicide and firearms. The publications also include a cookbook, All American Recipes from the Second Amendment Sisters. Articles from 2001-2002 discuss the history, goals, and membership of the Mount Holyoke chapter of SAS. The collection includes a 2002 audiocassette interview of group's founder, Christie Caywood, Class of 2003, recorded during her appearance on the "Live Fire" radio program.. Photographs of group members date from 2001-2002. The collection also contains a poster, a banner, t-shirts, hats rubber stamps, buttons, bumper stickers and a bullet-shaped pen issued by Second Amendment Sisters, Inc. or the NRA.
