Abstract:
Stow, Sarah Deborah Locke, 1836-1927; College teacher and author. Mount Holyoke Female Seminary graduate, 1859. Mount Holyoke Female Seminary teacher, 1859-1868 and 1877-1889. Papers contain letters, compositions, writings, and biographical material. Primarily documenting her academic and social experience as both a student and teacher at Mount Holyoke.

Biographical Note

Sarah Deborah Locke was born on May 23, 1836 in Ashburnham, Massachusetts to William and Marinda Adams Locke. She graduated from Mount Holyoke Seminary in 1859, and taught there until 1868. On April 7, 1868 she married Reverend John Murdock Stow. He died in 1877, and Sarah Stowe returned to Mount Holyoke in 1878 to teach. She retired in 1889. She published "History of the First Half Century of Mount Holyoke" in 1887, as well as other books. Sarah Locke Stow died on January 9, 1927 in Ashburnham, Massachusetts.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Sarah D. Locke Stow Papers chiefly contain letters to family members, including a brother in the Civil War, and friends, notably the Humphrey family, which describe her life as a student and teacher at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, 1855-1868. Also includes her student compositions, other writings and biographical material.
