Historical Note
Mary Lyon founded the Buckland Female School in Buckland, Massachusetts, in 1824. This winter school taught girls, usually sixteen years of age, to be responsible women while preparing them to be teachers. Mary Lyon had two assistants, Louisa Billings and Hannah White. At its height, the Buckland Female School had 104 pupils, twenty-five of whom were boarders. Mary Lyon left the school in 1828 to teach at the Ipswich Female Seminary with Zilpah Grant Banister. The Buckland Female School closed in 1831. |
