Woodworth, Lydia Ames Sessions, 1833-1912; College teacher. Mount Holyoke Female Seminary graduate, 1856. Mount Holyoke Female Seminary teacher, 1856-1859. Papers consists of compositions, letters, clippings, biographical information, diploma, class of 1856 constitution, and a note from Mary Chapin. Primarily containing compositions prepared as a Mount Holyoke student and round-robin letters by classmates.

Biographical Note

Lydia Sessions was born in South Wilbraham (now Hampden), MA in 1833. She attended Monson Academy in South Wilbraham before entering Mount Holyoke Seminary. Sessions began teaching at Mount Holyoke following her graduation in 1856. In 1859 Sessions became the first Principal of Lake Erie Female Seminary in Plainsville, Ohio. Sessions left the school when she married Rev. William Walter Woodworth in 1866. Lydia Sessions Woodworth died February 9, 1912.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Lysia Sessions Woodworth Papers include compositions, letters, clippings, biographical notes, a diploma, the class of 1856 constitution, and a brief note to Lydia Sessions Woodworth from Mary Chapin. There are an extensive number of Lydia Sessions Woodworth's compositions in the collection. The compositions were written between 1847 and 1856, and they cover a wide range of topics. The letters are round robin letters written by members of the class of 1856.
