Mary Louise Browning was born on July 18, 1834, in Petersham, Massachusetts to Asaph and Lois Hastings Browning. She attended public schools in Springfield, Massachusetts and taught in Chelsea. She attended Mount Holyoke Seminary in 1855 (x1857). She did not graduate, but sailed for India as a missionary in July of 1855. She married David Herron in April of 1857, and they had four children in India. She founded a school which became the United Church of North India Girls High School in Dehra Dun, where she died on November 25, 1863.
The Mary L. Herron Papers contain correspondence, dated 1849-86, family material, biographical material and a published letter. The letters are primarily written by Herron to her family and discuss missionary life in India. Some family letters were written after her death and discuss family issues. The family material includes histories written by John C. Herron, Mary's grandson. The biographical material includes alumnae surveys and a newspaper clipping. The published letter was included in the February 1972 issue of "News Circle," a magazine of the American Women's Club in Delhi.
