Scope and Contents of the Collection
Chiefly letters to Martha Grant from family members and friends discussing her ill health and their activities. Includes letters from Joel Grant concerning his studies at Andover Theological Seminary, 1843, and Yale, 1843-1845, and his subsequent work as a minister in Lockport, Ill.; letters from John Grant describing his studies at Yale, 1842-1845; compositions by Martha Grant written as a student at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, 1842-1843; and a journal by Mary (Grant) Burgess, 1839-1840, describing the journey to India with her missionary husband, Ebenezer Burgess, and their life in Ahmadnagar. Correspondants also include Mary Ambler, Lorinda Bedortha, Mary S. Grove, Abigail Grant, Elizabeth Grant, Susan Grant and members of the Woodward family. This collection is organized into six sub-groups. |
