Biographical / Historical

The original vision for the House system at Hampshire, outlined in 1969 in "Planning Bulletin #2: The House Plan at Hampshire College" by Robert C. Birney, was to "create a living-learning environment in which intellectual curiosity and development will thrive." To this end, the College was "organized into units called Houses, each of 250-300 students and each with its own living, dining, and academic facilities." Opening in 1972, Greenwich House and Enfield House were named after two of the four towns flooded for the creation of the nearby Quabbin Reservoir, though in early plans for the College, Enfield was named House IV. In the period documented by this collection, Greenwich and Enfield were managed by a single House office. Each house had a different "House Master," a faculty member assigned to the house whose role was to foster community within their house and organize a variety of academic programming.
