Biographical / Historical

Leonard B. Glick obtained his B.S and M.D. from the University of Maryland in 1949 and 1953, respectively. He was involved in the medical profession for several years, including working as an Air Force physician. However, wanting a change in profession, he left the medical world and obtained a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvsnia in 1963. After teaching at Bryn Mawr College for a year in 1964, Glick became an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin, where he taught from 1965 to 1972. Coming to Hampshire College in 1972, he was Professor of Anthropology until 2002. Teaching courses on cultural anthropology, evolutionary psychology, ethnic conflict, and European Jewish History, Glick also became a prominant intactivist. Amidst researching for his first book, "Abraham's Heirs: Jews and Christians in Medieva Europe," (1990) He became aware of the role of circumcision in Jewish history. He then taught courses on genital mutilation, and published a second book, "Marked in Your Flesh: Circumcision from Ancient Judea to Modern America" (2005). Glick also self-published a miscellaneous collection of items that he wrote during his time at the University of Wisconsin and Hampshire College. Simply titled "History," this self-publication gives insight into Glick's professional interests.
