Biographical Note

Fosdick Beach Harrison was born August 5, 1862 in Bethlehem, Connecticut to William Robinson and Harriet Newel (Beach) Harrison. He attended Williston Academy before enrolling at Amherst College. At Amherst he was a member of Chi Phi and served on the Olio board. After graduating in 1890, Harrison attended Yale Divinity School where he received a Bachelor in Divinity in 1893. Ordained in 1894, Harrison remained a clergyman his entire career though he served as a sergeant in the Second Company, Governor's Foot Guard (Connecticut State Militia) during the Spanish-American war. He married Estelle Potter on December 29, 1904. They had four children: Fosdick, Elizabeth, Burton, and Caroline. Harrison retired from the clergy in 1935 and died on February 29, 1940, in Canton, Massachusetts.

Contents of the Collection

Papers and photographs pertaining to Fosdick Beach Harrison (AC 1890). The papers were produced during Harrison's time as an undergraduate at Amherst College. Folder one contains a journal kept by William Robinson Harrison from November to December of 1849. The journal was repurposed by Fosdick Beach Harrison as an account book covering the years 1886 to early 1889. Folder two contains receipts and correspondence relating to activities at Amherst College, including a subscription receipt for the Amherst Student and letters addressing an injury Harrison sustained during a confrontation between class years. Folder three contains diaries for the years 1887, 1889, and 1890. Harrison makes regular entries commenting on the weather and on academic and social activities. Folder four includes a copybook in which is written one lecture on the "Attic Orators" from the winter term, 1888. Folder five includes three photographs including Harrison. Two of the photographs feature the board of the Olio.

The folders are arranged by format. Paper-based materials are arranged chronologically and one folder of photographs is placed at the end of the collection.

Three group photographs taken between 1886 and 1890. Notes on the backs of the photographs indicate that Fosdick Beach Harrison is included in all three. One is labeled "Olio Board Amherst, Ma."
