Biographical Note

Poet David Schubert was born in New York City on October 18, 1913, the son of Benjamin and Rose Silver Schubert. David attended the Boys High School in Brooklyn, New York, where he was a precocious student whose impoverished circumstances but brilliant promise led to his entering Amherst before he was 16 years old. His career at Amherst was academically troubled and he was asked to leave the school early; however, several of his teachers appealed to the administration and he was allowed to attend Amherst once more. He remained at Amherst for about another year, when he again left. Subsequently, he entered Columbia University. He also served as an editorial assistant for the Bulletin of Brooklyn Institute. Schubert married Lillian Judith Ehre in 1934, and for a time the marriage offered him the stable home life he needed. He died of tuberculosis in the spring of 1946.

History of the Collection

The David Schubert Collection was collected piecemeal and over time. Multiple donors, including Schubert's wife, Judith Kranes, and a few of his teachers, gave the limited materials in their possession, suggesting an effort to provide a record for Schubert's brief life. The materials were kept in the form of an extended biographical file until there was enough to form a collection.

Processing Information
