Abstract:
Materials assembled by Jack W. C. Hagstrom in the course of writing a bibliography of poet Dana Gioia, which was published as Dana Gioia: A Descriptive Bibliography with Critical Essays (Parrish House, 2002). The collection includes publications containing writing by and about Gioia; correspondence between Gioia and Hagstrom; and Hagstrom's notes, correspondence, and typescripts for the bibliography.

Biographical Notes

Jack W. C. Hagstrom (b. December 2, 1933), physician, literary collector, LGBT rights advocate, and bibliographer, is a 1955 graduate of Amherst College. He earned an M.D. degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1959, where he went on to become Instructor in Pathology. He has retained close ties with the Amherst College Robert Frost Library as a member of the Friends of the Library and also as a collector and donor of modern British and American poetry, particularly work by gay poets. He has published several bibliographies of English language poets, including James Ingram Merrill: A Descriptive Bibliography (Oak Knoll Books, 2009); Dana Gioia: A Descriptive Bibliography with Critical Essays (Parrish House, 2002); and Thom Gunn: A Bibliography, 1940-1978 (Bertram Rota, 1979).

(Michael) Dana Gioia (b. December 24, 1950), is an American poet, businessman, and former Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts (2003-2009). He received a B.A. from Stanford University, an M.B.A. from Stanford Business School, and an M.A. in comparative literature from Harvard University. He has worked in the private sector as vice-president of General Foods and is currently a professor of poetry at the University of Southern California. In addition to writing poetry, Gioia has also written opera libretti, translated German, Latin, and Italian poetry into English, and edited numerous literary anthologies.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Jack W. C. Hagstrom (AC 1955) Dana Gioia Bibliography Papers consist of approximately 15 linear feet of material relating to Hagstrom's 2002 bibliography of Dana Gioia, entitled Dana Gioia: A Descriptive Bibliography with Critical Essays. It includes copies of periodicals that Gioia writings appeared in, along with several audiovisual recordings, copies of poems, and other ephemera such as Gioia-related announcements and programs. It also includes correspondence between Hagstrom and Gioia and bibliography-related correspondence between Hagstrom and publishers, Gioia associates, and others. Finally, the collection includes Hagstrom's bibliography notes and publication materials, such as drafts and worksheets.

Gift of Jack W.C. Hagstrom, along with a large quantity of books containing writing by or about Gioia, 2001-2004. Later additions were interfiled where appropriate with earlier accessions (e.g. later periodicals were interfiled alphabetically with the Gunn periodicals series).
