Abstract:
Professor of English at Amherst College, 1970-2008. Collection consist of research materials for his two major publications: Sherwood Anderson, a 1987 biography of the American author, and Manhood at Harvard, a 1998 book discussing the development of gender roles and norms in the post-Civil War US.

Biographical Note

Kim Townsend began teaching at Amherst in 1970, after receiving his PhD from Harvard. He also taught at Miles College in Alabama, but returned to the English department at Amherst, where he taught for 25 years. Townsend retired in 2008.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Kim Townsend Papers contain the research done by Townsend for his two major publications: Sherwood Anderson, a 1987 biography of the American author, and Manhood at Harvard, a 1998 book discussing the development of gender roles and norms in the post-Civil War US.
