Sir Richard Claverhouse Jebb (1841-1905), English classical scholar, was born at Dundee, England. He was educated at Charterhouse and at Trinity College, Cambridge. At Trinity College he was a Fellow, 1863-1905; Assistant Tutor, 1865-1875; and Tutor, 1872-1874. He was Professor of Greek at Glasgow University, 1875-1889; Regius Professor of Greek at Cambridge University, 1889-1905; MP for Cambridge University 1891-1905. He was knighted in 1900.

The collection is the gift of George A. Plimpton (Amherst College Class of 1876). Correspondence that apparently originally formed part of the collection was removed to the Miscellaneous Manuscripts Collection at an unknown date. (See "Related Materials")
