Series 7: FUND FOR THE REPUBLIC, INC.,
1952-1960

Arrangement:

Series 7, FUND FOR THE REPUBLIC, INC., 1952-1960, includes correspondence, press releases, minutes, clippings, Fund reports and other printed matter relating to the activities of the Fund for the Republic, Inc., an independent, non-profit corporation established in New York City in December 1952 with a grant from the Ford Foundation. Charles Cole joined its Board of Trustees in 1952. The Fund's mission was to promote the principles set forth in the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and the Constitution; as such it engaged in philanthropy and educational programs addressing issues relating to civil rights and civil liberties, including blacklisting, censorship and cultural freedom. In 1959 Fund for the Republic, Inc. established the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions, based in Santa Barbara, California.

The series is organized into five sub-series:

A. Correspondence, 1952-1959

B. Financial Records, 1953-1957, are periodic statements of the Fund's financial status.

C. Organizational Records, 1950-1959, consists of board meeting minutes, annual reports and other official records.

D. Activities, 1953-1960, consists primarily of records related to the Fund's grant funding operations and includes grant proposals and reviews.

E. Printed Matter, 1949-1960 and n.d., comprises the bulk of this series and consists of copies of magazine and newspaper articles, television and radio transcripts, and other printed matter distributed to Fund board members for current awareness on issues relating to the Fund's mission. This sub-series also includes official Fund for the Republic newsletters, pamphlets and occasional publications, many of them in draft form.

1916-1964

Series 14, KATHARINE COLE PAPERS, 1916-1964, are papers of Charles W. Cole's' first wife. It is organized into three sub-series:

A. Letters and Diaries, 1916-1949, are typescript copies of Mrs. Cole's letters, edited by Charles W. Cole. Organized chronologically.

B. Sojourn in Chile, 1961-1964, is Mrs. Cole's memoir and letters related to the Cole's' time in Chile when Mr. Cole served as U.S. Ambassador there. Mrs. Cole originally compiled the material in the late 1960s, apparently with the intention of being published, and Charles W. Cole edited the typescript posthumously.
