Biographical Note

Reginald French was educated at Dartmouth College (A.B., 1927) and Harvard University (M.A., 1928, Ph.D., 1935). He was a fellow at the University of Rome, 1929-1930, and then taught at the University of Missouri, 1930-1931 and Williams College, 1931-1935. In 1937 he joined the department of Romance Languages at Amherst College, where he taught until 1972.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Reginald French Papers consist mainly of French's notes relating to his dissertation (Harvard University, Department of Romance Languages, 1933), "Francesco d'Antonio da Fiorenza, Cieco." A copy of this thesis is also included. Most of the notes seem to date from later in French's career, especially the 1960s and 1970s. Included with the notes are documents and other materials relating to the courses he taught in the department of Romance Languages at Amherst College. The papers also contain a small number of reprints and essay manuscripts, along with some miscellaneous photographs, newspaper clippings, greeting cards and correspondence.
