Historical Note

Joseph Amiel, attorney, novelist, and screenwriter, was born in New York City on June 3, 1937. He attended the Fieldston School and Amherst College, graduating in the Class of 1959. He attended Yale Law School and earned the LLB there in 1962. He has published five novels: Hawks (1979); Birthright (1985); Deeds (1988); Star Time (1991); and A Question of Proof (1993), and has written screenplays for a number of movies.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Joseph Amiel (AC 1959) Papers consist of 8 linear feet of material. The bulk of this material relates to Amiel's novels, including drafts, typescripts, and promotional material for his books Hawks, Birthright, Deeds, and Star Time. The collection also includes drafts but not promotional material for his novel A Question of Proof.

The collection also includes 1 linear foot of material related to Amiel's screenplays. These include three screenplays that Amiel wrote or adapted around 1970-1971 for the pulp/camp production company Gemini Pictures International, including Daughters of Darkness (an erotic vampire story), Touch Me Not (later produced in the U.K. as The Hunter), and Resort. In addition, there are several folders of material related to Amiel's involvement with Gemini Pictures as a board member. Also included among the screenplays is a screenplay that Amiel co-wrote with Nathaniel T. Kwit, Jr. entitled Freedom and based on the Amistad story. This screenplay was scrapped after Steven Spielberg produced a movie on the same subject.

Finally, the collection also includes a small quantity of notes for English and history classes that Amiel took as a student at Amherst College.
