Biographical Note

Theodore Baird (1901-1996) was born in Warren, Ohio, and attended Hobart College (B.A. 1921) and Harvard University (M.A. 1922; Ph.D. 1929). He served as a member of the Amherst College English faculty from 1927-1969. Baird developed the famous English 1-2 composition course, which had a new set of assignments each year and in which a whole semester’s focus would be on a question such as, “Where are you?” “What is a game?” and “What or who is your true self?” A book about the course, Fencing with Words: A history of writing instruction at Amherst College during the era of Theodore Baird, 1938-1966, written by Robin Varnum, was published in 1996. Baird was also a prolific diary and letter writer. Baird and his wife Frances commissioned a house from Frank Lloyd Wright, which was built in 1940 on Shays Street in Amherst and is the only house Wright built in Massachusetts. The house was built in Wright’s “Usonian” style, and included furniture that Wright custom-designed for the space.

Frances Titchener Baird (1900-1996), better known as “Bertie,” was born Frances Haliburton Titchener and grew up in Ithaca, NY, the daughter of Cornell University psychology professor Edward Bradford Titchener and his wife Sophia K. Titchener. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wells College (1921) and a Ph.D. from Radcliffe College (1925). She taught for several years at Smith College as a professor of French Language and Literature. She was a member of the Ladies of Amherst Club (later renamed the Amherst College Women). With her husband, Theodore Baird, she commissioned a house from Frank Lloyd Wright, which was built in 1940 on Shays Street in Amherst. She died in 1996, several months before her husband.

Scope and Contents

The Theodore and Frances Titchener Baird Papers consist of 12.5 linear feet of material, which document the professional, personal, and literary life of Theodore Baird. It also includes a small amount of material from his wife, Frances Titchener Baird. The collection includes a large amount of incoming and outgoing correspondence to and from Theodore Baird. His correspondents include family members, former students, colleagues at Amherst College and other colleges and universities, and former colleagues who were involved in co-teaching his English 1-2 Freshman Composition course.

Also included in the collection are curriculum materials for the English courses that Baird taught, including assignments, exams, curriculum-related correspondence, and grade books. Some of the grade books are restricted by FERPA (the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act).

The collection also includes various writings by Theodore Baird, including apparently unpublished manuscripts, reprints of published journal articles, essays about Amherst College history, essays about the English language and teaching English, an essay about building his Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house, and Baird’s submission for the 1978 Amherst College oral history project.

Organization of the Collection

The papers are organized into 5 series:

1. INCOMING MAIL TO THEODORE BAIRD [1922-1996]

2. OUTGOING MAIL FROM THEODORE BAIRD [1931-1996]

3. CURRICULUM MATERIALS [1929-1984]

4. ESSAYS, ARTICLES, and MANUSCRIPTS [ca. 1936-1990]

5. FRANCES TITCHENER BAIRD MATERIALS [1913-1938]

Series Descriptions

Series 1, INCOMING MAIL TO THEODORE BAIRD [1922-1996], consists of approximately 4 linear feet of material. Much of this series consists of letters that Baird received from former Amherst College students, including a large number from former students serving in the military during World War II. Some folders also include carbon copies of Baird’s replies to the letters, and some letters are addressed to both Theodore and Frances. Some of the folders, particularly those containing letters from former students, contain short notes at the front that Baird wrote about the sender. A large portion of the mail in this series is letters that Baird received from his mother, Emma Lane Baird. This series also includes a small amount of non-correspondence ephemera and a small number of letters addressed to Emma Lane Baird. These letters to Emma Lane Baird may have been sent as enclosures in letters to her son.

Series 2, OUTGOING MAIL FROM THEODORE BAIRD [1931-1996], consists of approximately 5 linear feet of material. Most of this series was donated by Baird’s correspondents after his death. The largest quantity of material (3 boxes) is addressed to Homer H. Clark (AC 1939). Many of Baird’s letters from 1940 and 1941 discuss the construction of his Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house. Several of Baird’s correspondents were instructors with whom he co-taught his English 1-2 composition course, and many of his letters to them (including after they left Amherst for positions elsewhere) discuss the course and include copies of assignments. A 7 March 1941 letter from Baird to John W. Atherton includes a photo of Baird’s Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house under construction.

Series 3, CURRICULUM MATERIALS [1927-1984], consists of approximately 1 linear foot of Theodore Baird’s English Department materials, including assignments and exams for his courses, grade books, and some correspondence related to his courses. Much of this material was previously part of the Amherst College English Department Records.

Series 4, ESSAYS, ARTICLES, and MANUSCRIPTS [ca. 1936-1990], consists of approximately 1 linear foot of Theodore Baird’s published and unpublished writings, including several essays about different aspects of Amherst College history, an essay entitled, “On Building in Amherst a House Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright,” and a manuscript that appears to be at least partially about Robert Frost, among other writings.

Series 5, FRANCES TITCHENER BAIRD MATERIALS [1913-1938], consists of approximately 1 linear foot of material: copies of two journals articles that Mrs. Baird wrote, handwritten notecards that list the sources for her dissertation, a small amount of correspondence addressed to her, her graduation cap, and her diplomas. The diplomas are shelved with the Diplomas Collection.

History of the Collection
Custodial history:

This is an artificial collection. Some of the material in the collection was donated by Theodore Baird and his heirs, Paula and Walter Auclair. Many of Baird’s friends and former students donated correspondence from him to the Amherst College archives after his death, and these have primarily been integrated into the Outgoing Mail series. Some of the material in this collection was previously filed in the Amherst College Non-Alumni Biographical File and in the Amherst College Department of English Records.
