Scope and Contents

This collection contains personal correspondence primarily from J.R. Sitlington Sterrett to his family, written between 1872 and 1914. Earlier correspondence in the collection is written to Sterrett's parents and relatives while traveling or studying in Germany, Greece, and Turkey. Most of the correspondence from 1894 is written to Josephine Quarrier Sterrett from Amherst, MA. This correspondence contains news from Amherst College and the town. Correspondence with relatives from 1900-1911 concerns Sterrett's interest in tracing his own genealogy. Correspondence from these years also includes letters to his wife and daughters. The later correspondence from 1912-1914 are primarily letters to his daughters concerning familial news. The single folder of correspondence after Sterrett's death in April 1914 contains official communication from Cornell College about benefit payements and correspondence between Josephine Quarrier Sterrett and her daughters.

This collection contains photographs of the Sterrett family, as well as newsclippings about J.R. Sitlington Sterrett.

Transcription volumes contain the donor's transcriptions of the correspondence in Series 1, as well as transcriptions of correspondence not in this collection.

The Papers came to the Archives in six plastic-sleeved binders, with material arranged chronologically. For preservation purposes, the original manuscript materials have been removed from the binders and are in Series 1 and Series 2. Transcriptions have been removed from the binders and kept in their original order. The materials are arranged chronologically and organized into three series:

  1. Series 1: Correspondence, 1872-1914
  2. Series 2: Photographs and Newsclippings, 1873-1954
  3. Series 3: Transcription Volumes
