Scope and Contents

The Amherst College Dramatic Activities Collection documents the history of theater and dance at the College. The collection includes programs, scripts, photographs, slides, set and costume designs, publicity material, posters, newspaper clippings, audio/video material, and objects that chronicle the creation, production and review of hundreds of College performances.

The collection documents a wide variety of student performances: the "dialogues" of the earliest student organizations; ceremonial prank burnings of textbooks in effigy; thirty years of set and costume designs; photographs documenting performances beginning in the 1880s. In addition, the collection offers information on the history of student dramatic groups, theater and dance across the Five College consortium, and contains records of courses offered in the theater department at Amherst for 50 years.

More detailed scope and content notes are provided at the series and sub-series level.

History of the Collection
Custodial history:

Professor Ralph C. (Tuffy) McGoun (AC 1927) created the Dramatic Activities Collection between 1978 and 1984. McGoun was a professor of Dramatics and the lighting and technical director for College productions. He saved much of the 20th century in Kirby Theater. After McGoun retired, he volunteered in the College Archives. McGoun facilitated the transfer of the material preserved in Kirby. McGoun identified 19th century material from what had been located in the former Hitchcock Memorial Room (the precursor to Archives and Special Collections) and brought it into the Dramatic Activities Collection. While arranging and describing the collection, McGoun searched contemporary accounts of productions in College and local and national publications and added those accounts to the collection. He searched scrapbooks, bound volumes and photograph albums kept by students and identified and added any items that chronicled the dramatic arts at the College. He also arranged for ongoing transfer of material documenting College productions from the Department of Theater and Dance.

Professor McGoun collected, arranged, and described the collection between 1978 and 1984. Since different items were received at various times from different sources and were pulled together to form a collection, there was no original order to maintain. Additional items are added regularly. The original guide to the collection was in the form of a card catalogue providing alphabetical access by title of production to a chronological arrangement of material. The original card catalogue also included access to material by format and by general subjects relating to dramatic activities at the College. In 2002, the original card file was transferred into machine readable format. The collection was organized into 14 series reflecting the different formats and subjects represented in the collection. Access to the primary series, Dramatic Productions (now Production Ephemera), was expanded to three access points - author of the play, title of the production and date of the performances.

In 2019, ahead of the College's bicentennial, the Archives reporcessed the collection - removing duplicates, photocopies, and secondary source material. The collection now contains only archival primary source material.

Processing Information
Processed:ca. 1978-1984
By:Ralph C. McGoun, Jr. (AC 1927)

In 2019, the physical arrangement and finding aid were revised. Series 1 was renamed "Production Ephemera" and was broken out into 5 sub-series. Folders were given box and folder locations. Folders containing only photocopies from other sources were discarded. Cross-references to oversize material were incorporated into the finding aid as locations. Folders that were included in the list but were not in the box were deleted from the finding aid, as the collection did not include material on those plays. Series 9 (Posters) was incorporated into Series 1.

Contents List
Series 1: PRODUCTION EPHEMERA
1826-2012

Scope and content:

Series 1: Production Ephemera makes up the bulk of the collection and includes programs, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other materials documenting particular productions. Materials in this series represent some of the earliest undergraduate dramatic performances, dating back to 1826, through the 19th and 20th centuries to the present day. The ephemera in this series offers insight into the dedication and work that went into undergraduate student productions, from elaborate costumes and scripts to the hours spent at rehearsal.

This series emphasizes the Amherst College student experience and contains information about clubs and societies on campus, graduating classes, the development and history of drama at Amherst, and student journalism through the years, to list a few examples. The series also extends beyond the borders of the Amherst campus, offering a perspective on the history of popular theater in America and popular cultural entertainment of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The series includes photographs from 1879 to current productions, with the majority of original photographs dating to the late Victorian period to the 21st century. Examples include albumen prints, silver gelatin prints, and color prints. The collection also showcases changing styles of artistic design, typography, and printing throughout two centuries of dramatic productions. The material provides evidence of changing trends in drama, literature, and costume design.

Arrangement:
This series is arranged in four sub-series:
  1. Sub-series A: Amherst College Productions
  2. Sub-series B: Visiting Performers at Amherst College
  3. Sub-series C: Season Summaries
  4. Sub-series D: Minstrel Shows
  5. Sub-series E: Unidentified or Undocumented Productions

Arranged chronologically. This series is not a comprehensive collection of every production produced at Amherst College; the collection inventory reflects the productions for which the College holds archival material. In sub-series A, the date noted usually refers to the the month and year the production was performed. There may be other material in folders that are related to the production but do not share the same date as the performance. There may also be material related to subsequent performances, but in general the date on the folder refers to the first occurrance of that particular production.

Folder titles include the production title or best estimation of the production title. Sometimes folder titles may not correspond to the title on the cover of the program but rather refer to a production as part of a larger event. An effort has been made to include individual performances making up a larger event as a note at the folder level.

Boxes 61, 62, 63, 64, and 65 contain posters arranged by size. They are arranged at the box level and are not foldered.

Related material:

It is advised to examine the inventory for Series 8: Scripts and Music Scores, Series 9: Slides, and Series 10: Costume Design for additional information.

Psi Upsilon Fraternity, Sub-series D: Minstrel Shows

Biographical note:

Minstrelsy was an form of popular entertainment that is often considered one of the first distinctly American theatrical forms. Minstrelsy in its most recognizable form largely began in the late 1820s and early 1830s with the performances of Thomas Dartmouth "Daddy" Rice, whose created the wildly successful song-and-dance number "Jump Jim Crow". By the mid-nineteenth century, minstrel shows almost exclusively referred to shows with white performers in blackface, and relied heavily on racist stereotypes. As minstrelsy developed and rose in popularity, the stereotyped caricatures were crucial role in solidifying pre-existing racist notions and in creating new ones.

Minstrelsy peaked in popularity in the 1840s, and by this time most minstrel shows generally followed a three act format. The first act would often begin singing and dancing meant to crudely parody the street performances of black Americans. The rest of the first act would usually consist of jokes and banter between the "interlocutor" and the "endmen". The endmen (blackface performers at the end of the semicircle) were often the stock characters "Bones" and "Tambo". The interlocutor was meant to be intelligent and clever as a sharp contrast to the endmen. The second act of the show was called the olio, and was variety acts that took place in front of the curtains while others prepared for the third section of the show. This section would often include a "stump speech", where a performer in blackface would deliver a nonsensical speech in dialect on any number of topics. The third act of the show was a skit. These skits served as representions of pre-abolition life or parodied "high culture" like Shakespeare of operas.

In the postbellum North, minstrel shows often reflected the specific anxieties of white Northerners. The skits often demeaned black Americans by portraying them as unfit to integrate into American society. As a result, a popular stock character in the Postbellum North was an urban, black dandy who was frequently gaudily dressed. Other Northern anxieties were also lampooned in minstrel shows, like women's rights, issues of class, and the "white slavery" in factories as the North industrialized.

Although blackface minstrelsy was likely one of the most widely successful forms of entertainment in the nineteenth century, during the beginning of the twentieth century its popularity was declining. However, the legacy of still minstrel shows persists throughout popular culture. Features of minstrel shows seeped into other forms of entertainment and the minstrel show was a central precursor to other forms like vaudeville, burlesque, and stand-up comedy.

Arrangement:

This series is organized by production and then chronologically by production date. Many of the productions were staged by Amherst College fraternities under assumed troupe names. Where possible, folder titles reflect the stage name as well as the actual name of the groups performing.

Scope and content:

Subseries D of the Amherst College Dramatic Activities Collection consists of 0.5 linear feet of material related to minstrel shows at Amherst College from 1870-1939 (bulk, 1882-1906). The majority of the materials are playbills, programs, and advertisements for minstrel shows put on by Amherst College students but there are also some other materials like tickets, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Many of the shows were performed at Amherst College, but several shows were also performed in the surrounding area in the town of Amherst and the town of Northampton. There is also a small amount of material (newspaper clippings) from minstrel shows staged at Amherst College by the Amherst College Buildings and Grounds Department.

Restrictions on access:

There is no restriction on access to Subseries D Minstrel Shows for research use. Particularly fragile items may be restricted for preservation purposes.

Restrictions on use:

Requests for permission to publish material from Subseries D. Minstrel Shows should be directed to the Archives and Special Collections. It is the responsibility of the researcher to identify and satisfy the holders of all copyrights.

One production of Cat on Hot Tin Roof appears to be put on by a non-Amherst College organization. The sub-series also contains two plays, presumably written by Amherst College students in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
